Making the connection between art and wellness

Thanks to a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco, we were able to offer a series of workshops for teachers about using art to promote emotional wellness for ourselves and the young people we work with. Read about why we believe Art is for Healing in “Our Values.”

In Spring of 2023, we held:

  • Feedback workshops with educators who used Where Art Lives lessons

  • Two workshops for after school staff with exciting partners

  • After school workshops for SFUSD teachers

  • Workshops with students and their teachers

These events will help us refine our lessons and create new lesson slideshows to help all educators find wellness and healing through art with their students.

Two workshops for after-school staff and teaching artists

We are inviting after school youth development coordinators to attend trainings during the day this spring to try some ideas for using arts activities to help young people be healthy and expressive. Up to 10 staff members can earn $20/hr stipends for attending.

Collage for resiliency and healing

May 23, 11:00am-1:00pm
Don Fisher Clubhouse, 380 Fulton St, San Francisco, CA 94102
Artists from A PLACE OF HER OWN™ will lead us in a process for using intuitive collage for healing and resiliency. How can these practices be adapted to better serve youth in an after-school setting.

Purpose: Get a taste of how to create a deck of intuitive collage-based cards that can make it easy to access inner wisdom. We will demonstrate how these cards can become guides for any aspect of life.

Why: Creating and engaging with your INTUIT Cards™ encourages compassionate self-inquiry, turning a conundrum into an epiphany and fear into curiosity. We are here to give you a moment of what it is to rely solely on your intuition.

Playing with clay together to interrupt cycles of injustice

May 26, 11:00am-1:00pm
Contemporary Jewish Museum
Tour of the Cara Levine “To Survive I Need You to Survive” exhibition and a sculpting workshop. The exhibit incudes “This is Not a Gun,” in which the artists and community members use clay to recreate objects mistaken for guns during police shootings of civilians. How can we adapt these contemporary art practices to help young people find healing and resiliency in our after-school programs?
