Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Should the message in my art be about the dangers of vaping or the importance of recycling?
A: You decide! You’re the artist. What message will do the most good for your community?

  • Q: Does our art have to be in the graffiti style?
A: No, you can use whatever style you want. You’re the artist, it’s your choice.

  • Q: Does my art have to include a word?
A: No. So long as you think about what effect your art will have on a community, you can make whatever type of art you want. You’re the artist, you decide.

  • Q: What type of gift card can we win?
A: We will email the winners to ask what type of gift card you want. We can mail you a physical card that you can use like a credit card at a store, or we can email you a digital gift card that you can use online. We can also send you a gift card for any store that offers one including Blick Artist Supplies or Amazon.

  • Q: I’m 20 years old and I attend Ida B. Wells High School. Can I enter?
A: Yes! Anyone enrolled at an SFUSD school or with a Five Keys charter school program can play in this challenge now matter what your age is.

  • Q: Who will choose the prize winners?
A: Some winners will be chosen randomly in a raffle. Some winners will be chosen by a youth jury based on which art is the most inspiring.

  • Q: Why are you encouraging graffiti? Isn’t it illegal?
A: First, we need to notice that the word “graffiti” has two common meanings. It is sometimes used to mean a type of vandalism when someone paints or writes on someone else’s property without permission, which is illegal. You can read all about the laws against graffiti vandalism and the rights of artists here.
The other common definition of the word “graffiti” is a style of art that is an element of the Hip Hop art and social justice movement. This is the definition of “graffiti art” art that we are using on this website and in our program. The graffiti style of artwork can be done in sketchbooks, on canvas, on computers, and can be painted on walls with or without permission. It is a style of artwork invented by teenagers in cities that very quickly became popular every where in the world. Learn more about the history of Hip Hop in our “Practice your fills” lesson.
